Day 15. Serve

Jeff Goins suggests that Service to the reader is the final step in this challenge.

He writes ‘You need to reach out, be a resource, offer to use your words to help someone in need.’

I believe I am doing that….

He then suggests service to to and between writers:

The challenge

Are you ready to be generous and start serving your audience? Here are a few ideas to get you started (pick at least one):

  1. Do a giveaway of a product or service. Find authors or organizations wanting to partner with people like you, and ask them for donations. Do this to build trust with readers, and make sure whatever you give away adds value.
  2. Conduct a survey. Find out what readers (or perfect strangers) want, what they struggle with, and create something just for them. This can be a blog series or an eBook or a whatever. Just make sure there’s a need for it before you make it.
  3. Write something important and give it away. Publish an eBook to Amazon and distribute it through the KDP Select Program. Or offer a free PDF in exchange for people subscribing to your blog.
  4. Answer all correspondence. Respond to every single email, phone call, tweet, etc. Do this until you can’t possibly keep up anymore.

I am in thinking mode now as I consider how to proceed with this excellent idea.

Thanks for the challenge Jeff, and the inspiration. And thanks to my new readers and social media followers for finding me….

Day 14: Brand

Creating a Brand….
This involves the total Mis en scene. Link
Everything that can be seen and heard in relation to your name. Your writer’s name. your book title, images etc.
I created this Blog for the book The Avalon Journals. I also created a Board on Pinterest to share images in harmony with my writing. I took the POV of being a potential movie producer of this book of mine.

And over the years I developed a signature. The other day I was signing a prescription and the staff member commented that she loved my signature. I told her that I hoped to be signing it all over my published books. This led to a great conversation where I learned about her unwell daughter who it now appears to be an inspirational song writer.
What works for you? Would Joanne Rowling have been as  successful as JK Rowling?
Who will you be?

Day 13: Publish

Publish. Is this the verb that moves you from being a writer into being an Author?

These days we can self publish. I have a few friends who have done these. Successfully.
One even thanked me effusively in her acknowledgements.
I have ebooks ready to go to the technical stage.
I have moved closer to publication through this site, through this challenge.

Day 11: Declutter

On Friday I announced I was about to undertake the Great Office/Studio Purge.
I was ruthless and made significant inroads.
As to decluttering one’s writing. This can be a challenge.
Using twitter where we need to write economically – 140 characters – or writing Drabbles – 100 word narratives, with a beginning a middle and an end – Can be good training. Stephen King in his quintessential book ‘On Writing’ discusses this subject. Ah I recall the evocative example ‘Plums Deify‘. Well, they do, don’t they?

Day 10: Share

Share. Now this is my territory. I love to share, credit and lift.
In the bible it is said this way ‘…cast your bread upon the waters and it shall return into you two fold ‘
In other words when you share lift give serve etc YOU will receive back. You can’t not. It is an eternal universal law.
One of the ways and places I do this through the majority of publications on
A String of Pearls the Ezine for Women, by Women that I created and Edit.

Often it is as Jeff suggested, better to do your good works in secret.

Day 9: Connect

Making Friends
Finding fans
Earning patrons
– Due to the physical challenges I face I am abundantly grateful for social media. I have friends all over the world.
– Blog challenges have helped me find fans, but they quickly become friends.
– Patrons – hmm this is a challenge and partly because it is rather new to me.
To be true I am probably better at giving support then asking for it. Connecting is something I do easily.
Yet, something to think about…
